Dr Rosalind Hayes
Postdoctoral Research Associate
I received my PhD from the History of Art department at University College London in 2022 for a project about the visual representation of Britain's meat supply chain in the late nineteenth century. Prior to Exeter, I taught at UCL and on programmes delivered by the educational charity Art History Link-Up. I am co-convenor of the Early Career Researchers Network at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art (2023-24), where I will also begin a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Summer 2024.
Office Hours: Tuesdays 3:30-4:30 pm (in LAV/716) and Thursdays 10-11 am (in LAV/MS7), via Teams or in person. Please email me for an appointment.
Research interests
My research and teaching consider the subjects and production of nineteenth-century art and visual culture through the lens of human-nonhuman history to address questions of materiality, landscape, mechanical reproduction, British colonial histories, and museum studies. More broadly, I demonstrate how fundamental the ‘species divide’ between humans and nonhumans is to European modernity and its visual manifestations. My work is interdisciplinary, drawing on a range of fields and examining varied media. I am particularly interested in the culturally contingent nature of ‘vision’ and, further, how the categories of ‘human’ and ‘nature’ are applied with Western traditions of knowledge production.
